How To Find A Guru.

Ever experience illumination overload?

You know those days when you indulge in that one-more-than-you-needed cup of coffee or glass of wine (but with a side pint of green juice) and that You-Can-Do-Anything self-help guide? You realize, a little too late, that you’ve surpassed your tipping point and what was once inspiring has started to make the room spin.

I was so loaded on workshops, conferences, online courses and yoga intensives… so hopped-up on possibility, personal responsibility and abundance that I was flat-out wasted.

As if desperate for a greasy breakfast after a long night of drinking, I sought out the most vacuous antidote I could sink my teeth into. Mindless hours passed as I devoured comments on Facebook and Twitter from people I didn’t even know and about things that had nothing to do with me.

Vapid judgments became my gospel.

But it just whet my appetite. Before I knew it I was weighing in on which celebrity wore it best, whether so-and-so was pregnant or just fat and if Ice T and Coco should stay together.

I’d careened from the laws of attraction to infinite distraction.

With adrenaline and cortisol coursing through my veins, I reached for the last of the Justin’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup 12 Pack I’d been simultaneously working through and punishing myself for all day. I was furiously planning my revenge against the girl who’d reacted to my reaction to her reaction over someone’s new profile picture when something caught my eye…

Emma, my blue-eyed, semi-Siamese kitty stretched out across a beautiful beam of sunlight on the floor raised her head, looked at me and yawned. Then, like a true guru, she lay back down into her enlightenment and left me to look for my own.

andreaI’m a former gymnast originally from Santa Cruz, California. Though I’d have voted myself Least Likely To Be An Entrepreneur, I proudly opened U Studio Yoga in Los Angeles in 2006. You can check out my rigorous vinyasa-style classes online here at My Yoga Online. I’m big on weaving philosophy into the asana and my recipe includes equal parts sweat and laughter too. Qantas Inflight MagazineShape, NFL Network, Los Angeles Times, Huff Post and Self have featured me. Oh, and I’ve been called a Rock Star & One of LA’s Best Teachers. (I know…pretty obnoxious.) I’m an ambassador for lululemon and contribute to Gaiam, Elephant JournalOrigin and others. Though my early childhood aspirations were to be a fairy princess, I’m pretty happy with the way things have turned out. Here’s a short video introduction to me.

{Guru, where are you?}
