I wish I could take you there. {poetry}
By Jessica Bundy.
I could take you there with me,
to that childish place, little fenced-in
square of concrete, scraped and bloodied
by a million knees;
I could bring you back to that day
when we all stood outside:
hundreds of balloons freed
from hundreds of tiny hands,
up, up, up into the air.
We let those colors go,
left them to wander somewhere
between the clouds and the stars;
we all stood outside watching
as pretty colors and string
were seduced by the wind.
Oh, the freedom of those
balloons drifting away
from that caged place;
the wind pulling and pushing,
the colors blurred and drifting,
until they were only dots,
and then entirely lost
from every upturned gaze…
they led us back to our regular day,
while our balloons floated away.
And I remember walking home
to the colorful carnage, caught by tree-traps
and city wires, all that rubber once free,
now twisted, worn, expired.
And I wish I could take you there,
back there with me, and show you
that the end is so easy, and show you
how strange and tragic it is
to be free.
