War Paint.
By Leila Hussein.
I woke up today and felt like a Bitch Warrior.
I got up today and put my Bitch Warrior makeup on.
Black eyes.
Back the fuck up.
They say it’s war paint.
And it is,
sometimes…
Sometimes it’s love paint
and sex paint.
And pretty nature,
‘look-at-those-leaves-I-wonder-if-I-could-re-create-them-on-my-eyelids’
paint.
Sometimes it’s creation paint,
and elation paint.
Sometimes it’s design
and conquest.
Sometimes it’s awe-inspiring shine,
look-at-these-eyes
kind of paint.
But today it’s war paint.
Why?
Because there are some unsavory characters
on the periphery of my life.
I don’t want them in my life,
But they are here,
for a time…
Have to pass them in the hallway of my life,
on the way to hope’s door
And so…
I cover my eyes all in black today,
not in mourning
but as a celebration of my Lioness ways.
As a message to stay the fuck away.
An attack of color to disarm them from their attacks.
Like a tiger.
I stand back,
and dare you to come closer…
If I had a balaclava
I would wear it.
Never felt the urge until today,
I swear it.
I’ve had enough of being intimidated.
I can’t stand in the road
while you reverse the car,
anymore…
It’s not in me
to lay down today.
What’s the worst that you can do to me?
Fix some broken bones with tea leaves…
Pain is just that.
Temporary.
I don’t believe in fighting,
until I’m fighting for myself.
Then I know I have the right.
Fall back.
Think again.
Now proceed the right way.
I’m a Bitch Warrior.
Can’t touch these bones today
I will do whatever I have to do
to feel safe.
Today I am of bitch,
of feathers.
Of paint etched across my heart.
A solemn promise
to protect my own well-being.
To come at many,
and whisper at few.
To nourish the rising sun in me,
and cut down the falling tree in you.
So come on, lunge toward me
with roar of hate.
Not today.
Not today.
I am a Bitch Warrior…
