My Life as a Raindrop. {poetry}
“This is just a play, I will go home one day. Someone is watching over me.”
This was the only thought that gave give me hope and strength during the depressing days of my not-so-easy childhood. A boy of 12, I had no clue, of what this thought was trying to tell me, let alone where it came from. All I knew was that it gave me the courage to take life one step at a time.
My feeling of being watched over was finally validated years later when I met my spiritual teacher and understood — this thought was of surrender and letting go; of recognition that there is more to this life than what we see. Yes, it is all a play, and I will go home once I finish playing my part.
As I was contemplating my journey while looking out of the window one evening, it started to rain. Watching the rainfall I was deeply moved, I suddenly felt one with the rain — just like a raindrop falling from the familiar sky into the unknown, afraid and alone, unaware of the role it will eventually play, till one day it evaporates home. This poem is an expression of what I experienced.
From the clouds I jump
Sparkling bright
Suddenly free
Suddenly independent
From high above
I see in wonder
The world so tiny
compared to me
The wind blows
I feel it on me
It takes me hither
It takes me thither
I see the world growing bigger
Suddenly alone
What am I going to do?
I try to turn back but in vain
My cloud is so far behind
It can’t be recognized
Lost and alone, I fall
I land with a plop!
Everything I knew myself as
Everything I thought to be
Is broken.
I have forgotten to fly,
The wind does not play with me,
It’s dark here!
It’s scary here!
I am no longer round
But flat and wide.
Will I ever find my way back?
Will I ever know myself again?
Suddenly, out of the darkness
Comes a golden drop
I ask:
Oh, my friend, how are you still round?
How are you so bright?
How do you look so peaceful?
It replies, soothingly:
Don’t be afraid, little one,
We are but the same
You will also be round again
You will find your cloud
There is only one
From which we came
For now,
Your shape has changed
Your cloud has moved
Your wind is lost
Let the earth guide you
Follow the path it shows you
You will pass through
Many a tough ground
But in the end you will return.
I thanked the golden drop
And saw what it did
I let go and followed it
The earth moved me
Here and there
I knew not what I was doing
Where I was going
But all I knew
Was that I would go back.
Suddenly I felt a pull
Oh, what was happening?
I was going up
I was taking shape
I was becoming round
The golden drop was by my side
I realized I was going home
Peace filled my heart
The earth became small
The sky became big
The wind played with me
There were so many like me
Some going down
Some coming up.
I landed as a perfect round
On a soft bed of cloud
The golden drop beside me
The journey I had just finished
Suddenly played in front of me.
From beginning to end
From a higher perspective
I saw the endless cycle of life
The role I played
The paths I traveled
The lessons I learnt
Till I finally was home
At peace
Just then
A drop trembled beside me
Just before it jumped
I whispered to it:
From the dark will emerge
A golden drop;
Heed its advice
Follow its path
Don’t be afraid
As one day
You will come back
Round again
On this bed of cloud.
