The Impossible Possibility of Bear and Owl: A Love Story of a Different Kind.
Owl was majestic
She was lithe and airy
Her wings had the grace, softness and beauty of flight
While her piercing talons proved to be tools of protection
Bear was grounded
He was earthy and treelike
His fur held the warmth and softness of his body
While his stature and huge paws reminded enemies to stay away
Owl was fearless
She was free
Her flights of freedom often reminded her of the giant world in which she lived
While her encounters with the other animals created a life of variety
Bear was content
He was rooted
His cave proved to be the place where he preferred to hibernate
While he and his bear family created the life of stability
Owl was selective
She only wanted what’s real
She wanted the gritty, the grimy and the tough stuff
While also wanting the sweet, salty and tasty flavors that were found beneath
Bear was open
He only wanted what was presented
He wanted the sweet, salty and tasty flavors
While not wanting to have to work through the gritty and the grimy stuff to find it
Owl was different from bear
And Bear was different from owl
So it seemed an unlikely pairing from the beginning
But fall in love they did
Owl could hardly contain herself
Bear was self-composed
Owl had never felt such depths
Bear was not so quick to dive in
Owl pulled on Bear’s fur to get him to fly with her
But Bear stayed put in spite of Owl’s protests
Owl spoke the native tongue of hoo
Bear spoke his language of… well, bear
But in spite of their differences, there was just something that couldn’t keep them apart.
Like, even though owl loved to fly
She also began to love staying grounded with Bear too.
She loved that he was like the tree she could always fly back to.
She had never known a friend with roots like Bear
And it seemed that even though Bear loved being grounded,
There was a part of him that loved to hear about Owl’s flights
He seemed to take great pleasure in hearing her stories about her travels
He found that he was able to see more of the world through the eyes of Owl
Owl loved Bear.
Bear loved Owl.
But Owl started to feel fearful that Bear seemed to know her soul the way he did
And she wondered how they could ever have a future together
And Bear seemed fearful about Owl’s need to explore
And he wondered if she was able to stay in one place for enough time
And their shared fears led to frustration
And their differences seemed to get the better of them,
And Owl struck at Bear and flew away defiantly… indefinitely.
And she flew without really knowing where she was headed.
She just knew she had to go.
And she felt free, but she knew she would miss her Bear
Even though their differences tore them apart.
Owl was going to fly as far away as possible to escape Bear and anything having to do with him.
But she couldn’t.
She stayed close.
And she told Bear that she would be near if Bear ever wanted to be friends again.
And Bear wished her well…
And Owl thanked Bear…
And wondered if the impossible possibility of true love between two different worlds would ever come to pass…
But that’s the funny thing about life: it’s not always for us to know. And even Owl, with her wise and intuitive ways, wasn’t foolish enough to believe that the love between her and Bear would ever cease to exist.
For she knew, that even if she was to never feel Bear’s soft fur on her beak again or his Bear paws through her feathers,
His touch would forever remain in her heart. His Bear laugh would always be heard echoing through the trees, and his face would forever be etched in her mind.
But more than that, their essence, their shared soul, would forever be tied together, regardless of how far away Owl flew or how deeply Bear decided to hibernate.
And so it is.
Bear and Owl.
An unlikely pairing, but a love that could withstand a lifetime.
